By 2050 myopia will affect 50% of the worlds population. This is partly due to genetics but also lifestyle - low levels of outdoor activity, prolonged near tasks and poor lighting levels.
Children are becoming myopic at a younger age which results in faster progression and higher levels of myopia.
Myopia causes increased risk of retinal detachment and myopic macular degeneration. The higher the myopia, the higher the risk.
